Laure Manaudou won the women’s 800 metres freestyle title at the French swimming championships on Sunday.

Manadou, the 200 and 400 freestyle world champion, was making her first appearance in France since splitting with coach Philippe Lucas and moving to Italy.

She looked in good shape but clocked a modest time of eight minutes 31.26 seconds ahead of second-placed Coralie Balmy (8:32.01) and Sophie Huber (8:32.20) in third.

Manaudou, one of France’s best hopes of success at next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing, is due to take part in eight individual events and three relays at the French championships.
